In order to move on to the national level courses and obtain a USSF-C, USSF-B, and USSF-A license, otherwise known as a National Coaching diploma, Advanced National Coaching diploma, and Premiere Coaching diploma respectively, all candidates must successfully complete the USSF-D course in their state. However, if a candidate played professional soccer for three years, they can be waived of the USSF-D license and go straight to the USSF-C course. If a candidate played professional soccer for five years, they are eligible to go straight to the USSF-B course. There are no waivers for entrance into the USSF-A license course. The USSF-C, USSF-B, and USSF-A courses are all 9 day courses (seven days of instruction and two days of extensive oral, written, and practical examinations). The courses emphasize field instruction in the areas of technique, tactics, and fitness. The courses also include instruction in coaching methodology, team management, and sport psychology. Once passing the USSF-C or USSF-B course, a coach must wait an entire calendar year before they may take the next course.
